A distinctive goethite specimen, traditionally described as “wood iron”, from the historic Restormel Royal Iron Mine near Lostwithiel in Cornwall, England.

This substantial piece is richly covered with dark metallic goethite, displaying a mixture of radiating, fibrous and finely crystallised formations. Across the surface, the mineral catches the light with flashes of steel-grey, silver-black and deep brown, creating a textured appearance that changes as the specimen is viewed from different angles.

Several areas show closely packed, fan-like crystal growth, while the darker central section has a more compact and velvety appearance. Small natural cavities and uneven pockets reveal additional layers of mineralisation, giving the piece considerable depth and geological character. Subtle rusty-red, ochre and earthy brown tones can also be seen around parts of the matrix.

The term “wood iron” is traditionally used for fibrous or banded iron-rich material whose structure can resemble the grain or texture of wood. This specimen’s dense, radiating growth and rich metallic lustre make it an appealing example of Cornish iron mineralisation.

Believed to weigh approximately 700g, this is an attractive British collector’s piece with a strong connection to Cornwall’s historic mining heritage. Restormel Royal Iron Mine was formerly known as Trinity Mine and became especially noted for its crystallised goethite specimens.
